Frequently Asked Questions about Solar
How expensive is a solar power system?
The cost of a solar power system varies depending on the size of the system that you choose. Low energy consumers will not need a large system. The more energy you use, the larger the system will need to be. An average family home system will range from $15,000 to $25,000 before incentive.
How long do solar panels last?
Most solar panels guaranteed to last 25 years and are expected to last much longer. The new technology in these panels has not been around long enough to really see the extent of their life. Here in our office we have solar panels that were made in the 1970’s that still work! Improved design and manufacturing should allow today’s panels to outlive most of us.
Do you do battery back up?
Yes we do! We use the LG Chem/StorEdge system. The StorEdge system is perfect for people who want to store their own solar energy or inexpensive grid energy for usage during peak electric times, reducing electric energy charges.
How much maintenance does my solar energy system need?
Typically your system is nearly maintenance free. All of our systems include some type of monitoring that allows you and us to view the system performance and spot a malfunction early. An annual visual inspection is wise. Occasional cleaning can help system efficiency but is generally not necessary. It’s okay to leave snow on your system during the winter months.
How heavy is a solar panel?
An average solar panel is about about 44 pounds or 4 pounds per square foot. This extra weight is typically not an issue on most roofs. During a site visit our technical sales team will check your roof structure to be sure that it is in good condition.
What does photovoltaic (PV) mean?
Photo = light, voltaic = electric. Photovoltaic (PV) panels turn light energy directly to electric energy. No heat capture, fluids or pumps involved. Ultra-pure silicon, when exposed to sunlight performs the magic.
How fragile are solar panels?
Solar panel construction today are much stronger and more resilient than anything in the past. While you still want to be careful with your panels, they can take quite the beating. They are built to withstand hail storms, fallen branches and poorly thrown baseballs.
How will I know if my solar panels are working?
Most solar arrays are paired with system monitoring. The monitoring system will tell you exactly how much energy your panels are producing. The stats can be viewed on your phone or computer.
Will solar increase the value of my home?
Whether you are in Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, in most cases the value of your home will increase. Several national studies have shown that solar helps to differentiate a home and increase the sales price. In markets where there are few solar homes, the determination of exactly how much value is unknown. The determining factor is typically “comps”, comparables on the market. In areas with many “comps” its much easier to determine the added value.
Does my solar energy system create noise?
The solar array has no moving parts to create any noise. The inverter, usually located in your garage, mechanical space, or on the exterior of the house, has a cooling fan that can produce a light hum.
Does my solar energy system produce pollution?
No, just clean, renewable energy for years and years.
